Dad did a great job getting Chloe ready for dress rehearsal while I was out of town at the school board retreat!

Dear Evan,
Today you are 8 years old. You came downstairs this morning and gave me a (somewhat rare) hug and smiled up at me with your grown up teeth and asked if I knew what today was. I told you I did because it was one of the happiest days of my life.
Today, on your 8th birthday, you are growing up so fast it makes my head spin. This year you have become much more interested in your friends and much more embarrassed by your parents. In fact, you get pretty upset if you think we are going to do or say something to embarrass you.
Sometimes I've wondered if you were turning 8 or 16 because sometimes you seem much more like a teenager, than my sweet little boy. Sarcasm. You have discovered it. You are good at it. Eye rolls. Has anyone ever told you your face could freeze like that? You and your friends play games that no one understands except you at recess. Remember Bob? I don't know, either, but it was a big deal to you and your second grade friends.
You are obsessed with playing military video games. Games you are too young to play. You are really good at them. Your dad and I don't last a minute. Your friends all love these games, too. I spend way too much time worrying if you are being permanently scarred by playing these games, or if your sister is being permanently scarred by watching you play these games, or if your friends' parents will black-ball our family for letting you play these games. You just smile and tell me not to worry.
You are so smart, but you don't really like school work. Doing your homework is a challenge. It can take us an hour and many frustrated sighs and eye rolls to complete your 8 sentence journal entry, but you will spend hours writing your novel, or your movie, or your comic books or anything else you want to be writing. You are a great reader and read above grade level, but so far the only thing I've found that you really love to read is Diary of a Wimpy Kid books or other "comic style" books. You are a good sport about trying the books I suggest. The thing that really amazes me is your math skills. Mostly because I have none. I am really glad you do, though. Those will take you far.
Evan, your teachers tell us what a great kid you are. How you are so kind and thoughtful. How you have a great laugh and love to tell stories. I love to catch glimpses of you at school and see the independent and original kid you have become.
I am so proud of you today on your 8th birthday. You are growing up so fast and you are such a great kid to be around. I love to talk to you and hang out with you. I love to watch you play sports and take care of your dog. It makes me smile when you search Christian music videos on You Tube. It is hard for me to believe you are so big, but I can't deny it when you are standing next to me at my shoulder. I want you to know on your 8th birthday how much I love you and am so grateful for the last 8 years. But, I am so excited to see the plan that God has for you. I can tell He is starting to work on your heart. You ask lots of questions and I am all too happy to answer them. One day soon, I think you will decide to turn your life over to Him and I know He has great things in store for you. You are everything I ever prayed for and I am so thankful for the joy you bring each day. You are one great kid and I'm so proud to be your mom!
Love,
Mom

Seven
Evan is a happy, smart, and independent 7 year old who is on his way to second grade!. He is an individual through and through from his conversations to his love of pajamas. He can often be found stalking a squirrel, deer, or even a bear or lion in the woods near our house on an imaginary hunting trip. Evan is taking up tennis, likes to pretend to be a soldier, and loves video games. Evan plans to always live at home except when he and his daddy go away to college.
I wish I had thought of this idea earlier, but as I was changing the description of my kids to update to their new ages, I realized that the few little words captures a lot of who they were at that age. So, I decided I would create a post with the old description before I change it. I only wish I would have done it for the last few years.
So, here was Evan age 7.

She's On Her Way!
The time has come for my little bug to graduate from pre-k. I get a little catch in my throat when I look at this little girl in this cap and gown. Even this little gown hangs on her now and the sleeves cover her precious little hands, but someday, much sooner than I'd like, she will wear a much bigger cap and gown. What will she be like then? She might be taller than me. She will for sure be beautiful and intelligent. I bet she will be confident and spunky and ready to take on the world! Kind of like she is right now. I hope she will love the Lord. I hope she will seek His plan. I pray she will always look for His purpose in her very special life. Oh the places she'll go! Kid, you'll move mountains!
Love hearing these sweet babies sing about Jesus!
I love you so much, Chloe, and I'm so very proud of you. I can't wait to see all that life has in store for you.
Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way!
