Pretty Toes

Chloe got a gift card for a pedicure for her birthday. I thought this was a fabulous idea and a great excuse for a little mother/daughter time. Chloe seemed to enjoy being pampered!

Dear Chloe

Fast. Today you turn 6 years old. We watched you swim at your first official swim meet today. You have swam one other time- at the "mock meet" last week. Today you were fast. You took 30 seconds off your last time. 30 seconds! Wow! Turning 6 really makes a big difference! You were thrilled that you swam so fast.

But, today, as I watched you swim fast, I couldn't help but think about how fast it is all going. 6 years. It just doesn't seem possible. It doesn't seem possible that 6 years ago today, I held you in my arms for the first time. It seems like only yesterday. It has gone by in the blink of an eye.

This has been a great year! You sailed right through kindergarten, loving each day and getting excellent reports from your teacher. Your teacher tells us how kind you are in school and how you can get along with any student in your class. She also tells us how responsible you are and that she can always trust you to do what is expected. You have done great academically this year as well. Reading came easily and naturally for you. I love, love, love to listen to your precious voice reading. I love, love, love snuggling on the couch together and reading your books from school.

This year you participated in ballet, soccer, gymnastics, and cheerleading. It is so fun to watch you in all of these things. Mommy coached you in cheerleading again and we had a ball, but you think you might want to play basketball next year. I'm excited to see you do that as well. You are definitely a girl who knows what she wants and is not afraid to speak up about it. I love that about you. You do not follow along with your friends. If you want to do something different, you do it. Even if it means playing alone. You don't care what everyone else is wearing. You wear what you like. In a lot of ways, this is kind of different from me. I am an independent person, but I've always been the type of person to go along with whatever everyone else wants. It sometimes makes me a little uncomfortable. I want you to have lots of friends and when you decide you don't want to play with someone I worry about your friendship. I sometimes try to steer you into participating in what the other girls are doing or wearing the things they are wearing. But, I'm trying to stop doing that because I know that your independence and strong-will are GOOD things. They will give you the strength to stand up when your friends make not so great choices and say, "I'm not doing that." They will give you the strength to venture out on your own and take the risks you need to take to do the AMAZING things God has in store for you. (Just don't venture too far. ) So, I'm working on biting my tongue when you express your desires and opinions. I'm working on not interfering with your decisions. I want you to be confident in your choices and to trust your instincts and to follow your heart and to always have the courage you have right now to go your own way. It makes me so proud of you. And I know it will serve you well.

I can't wait to see where this strong-will of yours takes you. I can't wait to see what God has planned for your life. I know it will be extraordinary because you are a very extraordinary little girl. As you wrap up your kindergarten year and head into first grade, I am excited to watch you grow and learn. I know you will fill me with pride. It is such and honor and privilege to be your mommy. You are so beautiful both inside and out and you make me so very happy. I love you sweet girl.

Happy birthday!
